1950–1968

Minnesota & the open road

Born in Minneapolis

The eldest of four sons, he grew up in Roseville, Minnesota, in a family shaped by teaching, music, painting, and sculpture.

Hockey changes course

Two broken arms in separate high-school hockey accidents ended his ambition to play professionally.

5,641 miles by bicycle

At 17, he rode from Minnesota through Canada and Alaska; the Minneapolis Star marked his return on August 26.

High-school graduation

Graduated from Alexander Ramsey High School in Roseville.

1968–1975

Training by doing

St. Cloud State

Studied drama and appeared in the university’s 1969 production of The Threepenny Opera.

Ohio University

Continued drama studies and performed in Three for Tonight and The Great White Hope before leaving short of a degree.

The unconventional apprenticeship

After travels through New York and San Francisco, he settled in Los Angeles and worked as a mime, juggler, musician, cabaret performer, and marine-mammal-show performer.

First screen work

Appeared as a young Marine in The Birthday Party, a U.S. Marine Corps bicentennial promotional film.

1976–1995

From daytime to an icon

General Hospital

National recognition arrived with five years as Dr. Jeff Webber on ABC’s daytime drama.

Prime-time leads

Played Adam McFaddan in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, then naval pilot Lt. Simon Adams in Emerald Point N.A.S.

MacGyver

Led seven seasons as Angus MacGyver, the inventive hero who favored knowledge and improvisation over violence.

Producing & Legend

Reprised MacGyver in two television films, then starred as Ernest Pratt / Nicodemus Legend in the 1995 UPN series Legend.

1997–present

Stargate & a wider mission

Leading Stargate SG-1

Played Colonel—and later General—Jack O’Neill as a series lead for eight seasons while also serving as an executive producer.

Returning to the gate

Made four guest appearances across SG-1’s final two seasons and appeared in Stargate Atlantis.

Franchise returns

Returned as General Jack O’Neill in Stargate: Continuum and five episodes of Stargate Universe.

Conservation & community

Has supported environmental and charitable causes, including Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Waterkeeper Alliance initiatives.
